One of the most common questions we hear is: how long does concrete take to cure? The short answer is that concrete sets within hours but keeps gaining strength for weeks. Knowing the difference between setting, drying and curing helps you plan when to walk on, drive on and build on your new slab.

Setting vs Curing: What’s the Difference?

Setting is when fresh concrete stiffens and stops being workable, usually within a few hours of pouring. Curing is the chemical process (hydration) by which cement reacts with water and the concrete gains strength. Curing continues long after the surface looks dry, which is why keeping concrete moist in the first days matters.

Typical Concrete Curing Timeline

Time after pour What you can usually do
A few hours Concrete has set; finishing should be complete
24–48 hours Light foot traffic; formwork on some elements may be removed
About 7 days Concrete has typically reached around two-thirds of its design strength; light vehicles on driveways may be possible
28 days Concrete is considered to have reached its specified strength, e.g. C25 or C30

These are general guidelines for normal UK conditions. Always follow your engineer’s advice, especially for structural elements and loaded slabs.

What Affects Curing Time?

How to Cure Concrete Properly

  1. Protect the surface from direct sun, wind, rain and frost once finished.
  2. Keep it moist for the first several days, using polythene sheeting, damp hessian or a curing compound.
  3. Avoid loading the slab early; keep heavy vehicles and materials off until it is strong enough.
  4. In winter, insulate the concrete and never pour onto frozen ground.

When Can You Drive on a New Concrete Driveway?

For a typical domestic driveway, allow at least a week before driving cars on it, and longer for heavy vehicles or in cold weather. Read our guide to the best concrete for driveways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does concrete dry or cure?

It cures. Concrete hardens through a chemical reaction with water, not by drying, so keeping it damp early on helps it reach full strength.

Can rain damage freshly poured concrete?

Heavy rain on a fresh surface can weaken and mark it. Cover the concrete if rain is forecast.

Can I build walls on a slab after a few days?

Follow your engineer’s guidance. Many builders wait at least several days before loading, and longer in cold weather.
